Compression garments: what the studies actually say

What holds up best in the studies, together with movement. But the class is chosen with a health professional.

Compression garments: what the studies actually say

What compression is

Stockings, tights or arm sleeves that apply pressure to the limb. Together with physical activity, it is what has the most support in studies on lipedema.

What the work shows

The international consensus states that compression aims to reduce pain and relieve symptoms, and that it works particularly well combined with movement.

A randomised trial on 33 women at a severe stage compared several approaches: all improved something, but compression combined with exercise did better on limb volume, pain and the ability to move.

Keep a sense of proportion: these are small trials. The effect is real, it is not spectacular.

What it does not do

It does not make lipedema fat disappear. It acts on discomfort, heaviness and pain.

Why we will not tell you what to buy

Compression strength is measured in classes, and the choice depends on your stage, your venous state, what you can tolerate, and the shape of your leg. A stocking that is too tight or badly fitted can hurt, or leave marks.

It is prescribed. Ask your doctor, and have your measurements taken by an orthotist or a trained pharmacist. In France, a prescription opens the right to partial reimbursement.

The practical tip that comes up most

Put them on in the morning, before the leg swells. And plan for two pairs, so that you always have a clean one.

Lovae is not qualified to recommend a compression class or a brand to you.
